Please note that Choir Practices will be on Thursday 3.30pm to 6.30pm only. We will not have practices on Fridays. However, we will conduct other choir related activities as and when necessary. This arrangement is made by the school to give you all more time to catch up with your studies and improve your results for Semester 2.

Dear Graduated Members,

Congratulations to all who have done well and achieved your desired results. You deserve every bit of credit.

For those who were disappointed with your results, don't lose heart. The only reason why we look back is to ensure that we do not make the same mistakes in our steps forward.

I know that you have worked hard and you know that too. There are many route to success... choose the one that is the most suitable for you. Maybe, this wasn't the right one.

As for current members, please give your seniors a pat on the back. Please also apply the values which we have been trying so hard to instill in you during choir activities to your studies. If you have understood my messages and nagging, you will do well.

We have come a long way not only in term our singing, but also in our organisational skills and efficiency. (I can see some of the ripple effect of the discipline and procedures that we have put in place over the last three camps.

Keep up the enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is contagious. There is no way for a new member to feels bored among a gathering of enthusiastic members. With the right attitude, we would be able to achieve greater heights.

Just one thing I wanna share with you that I always tell my son Gerald. "You don't always have to be the best, but you must always do your best." Live a life without regret, do your best in whatever you do.

Choir Camp (Nov 2010)

Thank you all for attending the Choir Camp. This camp would not have been possible without you and your active participation.

I hope that this camp was able to let everyone understand one another more. I also hope that this camp was able to determine the culture of our choir.

Our Culture: A gathering of people with a love for singing and know when to be serious and when to play our hearts out.

Discipline was generally good considering that we did not have to punish you to drive the point across. However, there is room for improvement. We'll work on that.

Everyone has grown over the year and I see a lot of you becoming more confident, both as a person and as a singer. As mentioned yesterday, I'll leave Mr Lim to develop you musically (He's done a great job at that) and your Teacher IC and I will develop all the other area (confidence and PRIDE.

I'd also like to thank your Sec 2 leaders for organising some of the events; Your Camp I/Cs Pat, Yvonne and Caroline for planning and running the whole camp and your Camp Seniors for being there for both you and me and for planning your night walk with such short notice.

Last but not least, your Teachers, Mr Lim, Mdm Rositah and Miss Lim for being there to train you and look after your welfare.

A Little Night Music

To All Sec 3 who attended the musical last night, I hope that this show opened up your eyes to the world of arts, stage and music. I hope that all of you felt that the money was worth it. Personally, I'd rather save up a whole year for money for movie tickets just to catch a musical.

The cast last light was spectacular. Each one of them was a strong and confident actor and singer. (this musical has lesser dancing) Other musical such as CATs and Fame would give you a more all rounded experience of a musical with Acting, Singing and Dancing.

Anyway, there are more good musicals out there, just to list a few.

Dear Choir,

Congratulations for winning the award. Felt a bit awkward receiving the award on your behalf... (you'll know why). Anyway, keep it up! Lets win the Fittest CCA for performing arts next year. Maybe we should all put PT in our training schedule next year. :)

On this note, I personally feel that you also deserve the Best Improvement Made Award for Performing Arts. We have really achieved a lot this year and I recognise all your efforts. For those who have put in effort, but not your 100%, do it now. Lets make history by being the first Choir to go from C.. to G... :)

For the Sec 3 members who would not reap the benefits of going from C.. to G..., I'll sponsor your trip to a 5 star resort at Port Dickson (Rooms only) at the end of next year after your National Exams. Yes... this includes our Sec 4/5 seniors this year who would have also contributed to your success.

I appreciate your presence today. To be perfectly honest, I was disappointed on Tuesday when I saw your response to whether you would like to practice more. After careful consideration over two days, I've decided to be less democratic and get you all to practice real hard. I'll let you decide next year during SYF if it is all worth it.

Of course as before, I'll continue to look after your welfare as well. On this note, I will also start to take disciplinary action against those who do not comply to the rules and meet my expectations.

Managing Other People's Ignorance

I understand that there were a number of instances where people, mostly your peers make fun of the way you sing. While I can understand why you feel upset, I cannot forgive if you feel embarrassed. Let me explain to you why;

Why do people make fun of the way you sing?

Pure Ignorance

We all display a bit of this from time to time. The most important thing is not to remain ignorant for too long. The people who make fun of how you sing probably do not understand or even know that there are different methods in using the instrument of ours, the voice. These people only know music and songs of their time and finds music from their parent's generation very strange and silly. What about you? Do you know enough about singing and the different singing techniques there are? I don't, that's why I always make it a point to attend your choir sessions and learn from Mr Lim, as much as I can. If I find that I don't quite understand what he's telling you, I'll go look it up on the net. (and post it on the blog if possible).

I have shared with you before that during my secondary school days in the harmoncia band, there were always instances where other CCAs which also produce music, belittle us as they think that they produce more superior music. From that time onwards, I have made it a point to learn traditional musical instruments and arts as there are more than enough people who will appreciate (or at least they pretend that they do to look fashionable) contemporary music and art. Since then, I have also made it a point to appreciate other art forms, be it classical or modern. To put on record, I played the bass harmonica (yes the big bulky on which pple say look like a hamburger) in secondary school, joined the Chinese Orchestra for 3 months in JC (but left as they insisted that I played the Double Bass because of my height when I wanted to play the Er Hu) and subsequently became a Lion Dancers instead, and finally joined the Hall 3 Choir for 4 years in the University (Although I stay at the hostel only for 2 years, I continued singing with them for the next two years as I totally enjoyed singing in a choir).

I once had a conversation with a dancer (not referring to dance society) about HIP HOP. He told me that HIP HOP is cool (undeniably) and it is everything. While he did not put down other dance forms (he was simple expressing his personal preference), he has shown shallowness in the appreciation of the art form which he is so passionate about, Dance.

So while we get irritated with other's ignorance, I hope that we do not display similar levels of ignorance. Be it towards ourselves or other Performing Arts.

Pure Jealousy / or Personal Low self esteem

Well this is pretty common as well. People tend to make fun of others when they don't feel too good about themselves. If a person has confidence and a pretty good opinion on himself, he would be able to tell you many good things about themselves and not go on and on about how others are not as good as they are. A person's worth is not measured against the worth of other people. Even if you sang badly, another choir who jeer at you has probably shown their shallowness both as a singer and as a person.

So why can't I forgive you for being upset over other's negative perceptions and jeering

Refer to the two points above on why people make fun of others. Now lets look at ourselves. If we feel embarrassed if others make fun of us, we have just told the rest of the world that yes, the way that we sing is funny and strange. This is totally unacceptable for one who claims to be passionate about he art form which he is engaged in. This is also one of the reason why Mr Lim gets so upset with you sometimes because yourself consciousness suggest that you think that the way which you are singing is embarrassing. So can you blame others for thinking likewise. I am not suggesting that you simply ignore the irritant. This is where the next part of ignorance comes in. If I ask you to enlighten the irritant on why you sing the way that you do, are you able to do it? (confidently) If you can't, then you will simply have to live with other people's negative perceptions and jeering and feel sorry for yourself for the rest of your life.

I will tell you when you are not singing well. However, I will also go all out to defend you when I know that other factors are influencing the audio and visual experience. However, we do not use them as an excuse not to sing well (remember what Mr Lim and Mr Adyll said?) For example, Miss Thien and Mr Beng had their reservations when I told them that I do not want microphones for you at YST. Their judgement were passed based on what they hear in the hall, which had very different acoustics. If I did not know what I was talking about and a good level of confidence in you, I would have a very difficult time convincing myself, not to mention others.

Yes... I know that this has been a long message and I thank you if you have persisted and read up to here. I feel that I need to address this issue and I'm sure that it'll not be the last time. I hope that all of you will display and put in action one of our PRIDE values, passion for learning. Start with really understanding Choral Singing, then go on to other forms of Singing, then to other art forms. From art forms, move on to other things such as sports, nature, etc. Suddenly, you'll find that the world is such a beautiful and interesting place when you are able to appreciate so many things around you. You will also be a happier person as you'll not be so bothered with other's negative perceptions. (but do not ignore constructive criticism)

Great Job for PHiesta I

Dear Choir,

Thank you for your months of effort in preparation for this event. I hope that this has been a great exposure for everyone of you. It is a waste that Edwina and Chloe (Wee) was not able to join us for the performance. The audience, especially the teachers, had very positive comments of your singing. The concert is now over and its time to continue sharpening our tools. I'll be speaking to you'll in the coming practices on what's going to happen for the rest of the semester leading up to SYF. Can those who have taken photographs yesterday kindly share them? Can Diyanah help to collate the photos?

I think that we must thank Mr Lim for this perfectionist demands. Technically, you have undergone only about 40 hours of training with Mr Lim from since January. Listen to how much you have improved. With more hours of training and your positive attitude, I'm sure that we would be able to reach our goal for SYF 2011.

We also need to thank Mr Adyll for conducting you. I am impressed with his professionalism. He gave his best although you are not a choir under his charge.

An on a personal note, I would like to thank Ms Lim for taking such good care of all of you yesterday. I didn't have to worry too much for all of you and thus was able to concentrate on Front of House matters. I hope that all of you had the chance to get to know Ms Lim better.

Its unfortunate that Mdm Rositah (now on teacher work attachment) missed the concert, (probably stuck at SPH) Mdm Rositah, write something bout us on the papers ok? :)

I'm also glad that your Sec 4 Seniors came to support you. And thank you (Teresa, Grace, Lynette and Poh Im) for the sunflower. I really appreciate it. I needed the moral support and a pat on the back (you know why right?). I heard that they had something for you too. Hope that all of you liked it. I got them to buy you'll some bread too. But by the time it arrived, all of you were busy with changing and preparing for the concert. Now I'm stuck with 6 loafs of bread. (Teresa, Grace, Lynette and Poh Im were each supposed to bring a loaf home last night after our very late dinner, but we all forgot about it) Also a big thank you to the Sec 4 seniors who helped. Lynette for helping you'll with the dressing up and make up. Grace and Teresa for helping me at the Box Office. Its a great feeling to know that I'll have your support when I need it and that you will be able to do a great job at it.

I'm happy with today's practice session. I hope that you all felt happy with your own performance too. Remember that we would like to repeat a successful practice and rehearsal as we can so that our chance of putting up a good performance is close to 100%.

I'm also glad that you have been complimented by Mr Adyll. See, I don't tell you things just to make you feel good. With a positive attitude, and good instructors / conductors, you will achieve wonders. Keep it up.

Changes in Practice and Rehearsal Schedule and Details

Dear Choir,

Please take note of the following;

Practice on 2nd July 2010 (Friday)

Mr Adyll will be here to practice with you on Friday. As such, we can only start practices at 2.30pm and end at 4.30pm instead of the schedule time 1pm to 3pm. Please keep your parents informed. Do get them to call me if they have any query.

Practice on 9th July 2010 (Friday)

We will cancel this practice, but we may have a choir bonding session on this day as Mr Lim will be in Taiwan and Mr Adyll is not able to come on this day.

Rehearsal on 13th July 2010 (Tuesday)

The rehearsal venue is changed to the school hall in view of the very tight time for traveling to the venue and late return to school. As such, the rehearsal timing will be from 3pm to 6.30pm.

16th July 2010 (Friday)

All performing arts group members will leave class immediately at 9.35am and gather at the foyer with all logistics and personal belongings required for the performance at YST. We will arrive at YST and must get ready for our practice on the stage by about 10.30pm.

The last lap leading to the performance is crucial and I hope that everyone will endure and give our best for each and every practice, rehearsal and performance.

Hi Everyone, please take note of the dates. It seems like its a lot, but it basically our normal practice dates for three weeks and two extra sessions. Please take this last lap seriously. We are all running it together.

Good news that Mr Lim managed to get a friend of him to stand in for the concert. His friend is also an experienced conductor. I've also managed to get a pianist to play the accompaniment. I hope that all of you see how fortunate you are with all the resources provided for you;

A very good concert hall (not just any auditorium)
A good instructor / conductor (Mr Lim)
A good violinist (Mr Daniel Beng)
A good stand in conductor (Mr Adyll Hardy)
A qualified pianist

So don't waste this opportunity to present your best. So remember to practice hard (Both during practices, rehearsals and at home). This is your show! This is your first chance to raise people's eyebrows.

Take every opportunity you have to sing when others are looking at you. (It is actually a good thing that people would stop and listen to you)

Good but not your best

Today's singing was good... but it was not your best. In fact, I think that you sang better on Saturday. I would still like to reiterate the point that no one should blame an external situation for not putting up a good performance.

It is ok not to be heard very well if the AV doesn't work too well, but it is not a good excuse for not singing well. Likewise, it is not a good excuse to say that the Principal was there (and for that matter any one else) and therefore you did not sing well. Lets all work towards being a professional performer.

One more thing... please work on your pitching for the Pei Hwa Public School Song.

You put up a good performance yesterday at TP although I know that its still not your best. I'm impressed with some of you who stayed back after I dismissed you on Friday to practice on your own. Live a Life without Regrets.

Dear Choir,

The biggest regret in life sometimes is not putting in our best. How often do we come across people who tell us that, "actually, I could do this and that", "if I did this, then I would be...". We do not feel a sense of regret over situations we cannot control. Instead, regret comes when we know that WE could have done something about the situation, but did not.

I just want everyone of you to do your best and present your best for every rehearsal and practice that you have. If you are able to put up a good show for every practice and rehearsal, then your actual performance can only get better. Like what Mr Lim said, "there no point sounding really good behind the doors". Please remember to do your best.

I'll look forward to having a really good performance at the choir exchange today.

Great Job for the preview today

Dear Choir,

Thank you for a job well done today for the preview. I was tell your Sec 4 seniors sometime ago that if you sang really well for the concert, I would be moved to tears. I never expected you'll to be able to move me so soon. Sorry hor... a bit malu just now... but you know that those were genuine tears of joy from me. Don't tell my D&T students ok? Need to maintain that no nonsense image. Let me finish what I wanted to say to you all.

Mr Beng and I have been around when the choir was first formed and we both knew how the choir struggled in the earlier years all the way to SYF last year. And I could see that Mr Beng too was holding back tears of joy because he too was so proud of what you have achieved within 6 months. Every time I listen to how well you are singing and how much confidence all of you demonstrated, I start to get very emotional about it.

For years to come, the regret of not paving the way for a good SYF showing in 2009 will linger within me. I have always felt personally responsible for the disappointing results (for reasons which I will not state here). I have also always felt that I let your Sec 4 seniors down. I have also felt grateful for everyone who stayed with us and believing in me after the SYF last year. And so every time I hear you sing well, my sense of regret and guilt grows even more. Of course, I am also very proud of you all. Mr Lim is a very demanding instructor and I am glad that he is. Even more so, I am glad that most of you were able to take it in good light and responded to his demands.

I hope that with this, everyone will not become complacent and think that we have arrived at the destination. There's still a lot more room for improvement and I hope that all will be able to bite the bullet and carry on with your pace of learning. I want to see a performance on 16th July that will not only move me to tears, (i think that your seniors who are my invited guests to the concert will tear together with me too) but also move all other audiences.

A Tribute to Our Sec 4/5 Members

I know that I have given a short speech on this when we broke camp... but I still thought that I want to write it out on this blog. There was so much I wanted to say that I missed out a few important points. Furthermore, if I did mention those points... I'll probably tear. (Must preserve the image)

Firstly, let me thank all senior for sticking with us during the 4 years that you were with us. Over the years, there were some who decided not to come and there were others that left for greener pasture. Thank you once again.

Non-Exco Members

Ying Tian, thanks for giving choir and yourself a chance. I hope that you took some of my harsh words in good light and saw my good intentions. You're a good singer and I just hope that I could have developed you further.

Lim Min, also thanks for giving choir and yourself a chance. My deepest impression of you was your sleepy look. But you never fail to impress me when you can sometimes sing with your eyes closed. I confirmed that your can stay awake when you look like you are asleep during last year's camp. Anyway, thanks for helping out in last year's camp.

Joy, you're always a joy to have... and I mean it. Always so positive. Haven't heard you complain about thing before.

Shu Xian, my most committed member. Although you have your difficulty in singing. Your commitment to come for practices is appreciated.

Poh Im, thank you for serving in the Exco as the Vice President to fill in the gap that Lynette left when she was preparing for the N Levels. I will always remember you calling me "Cher" in your own unique way. I hope that you have found the time you spent in the Exco a meaningful one. I also hope that my influence on you goes beyond choir and Pei Hwa Secondary School.

Lynette, thank you for serving in the Exco in 2009 as the Vice President. And thank you for doing well in the N Levels so that we can have you back again this year. I appreciate your commitment to choir and your enthusiasm. I also appreciate your continuous help in the exco this year in spite of the fact that your were not officially reappointed (because you'll only be with us for 4 months). I hope that your willingness to serve without reward will inspire more members to be like you. I also hope that I was able to influence your life positively.

Teresa and Grace, I don't know who to write about first. So I'll follow the protocol and write about Grace first.

Grace, do you remember when I said to you on 9th June (1.30am) at 3NE Classroom that I thought that I would have "4 Grace". I hope that this gives you an idea of how impressed I am with you. Commitment and willingness to serve (not only in Choir) is something that I hope that every member would learn from. You genuinely care for others and I just hope that sometimes you would stop and care more for yourself first. But as I've mentioned to some teachers before... "then that would not be Grace". And it is also your credit that I am able to write on this blog. Thank you for serving as the Vice President for 2 years.

Teresa, your high expectations of yourself and the choir has made a positive impact on all of us. I am impressed with your resilience. I also know how emotionally strong you are. I know that the learning curve was steep for you when you were suddenly "thrown" the position of Choir President when you were in Sec 2. But I didn't see a little Sec 2 girl on our first meeting. I saw a mature young lady with the potential to lead. And it makes me proud to see how much you have grown in terms of confidence and leadership. Others may say that choir has no achievement (because people tend to judge how good a president is with the CCA's achievement), but to me, you are the best President we have in school.

The Exco and I have spent many hours together not only on choir matters, but to talk about life in general. I have learnt a lot from you (Teresa, Grace, Lynette and Poh Im), more than you could image. You were also my pillar of strength. I wonder at times whether I did more for you or if you did more for me, if I depended more on you than you depended on me. It is because of you that I am able to get the strength and determination to do the things that I do for choir. You have also set the standard for all other Choir Exco that comes after you. You have set the foundation right for choir and whatever achievement we may get for SYF next year would also be yours. It is time for you to concentrate on doing your best in your studies. Whatever grade you get, I would be proud of you as I know that you would have done your best. I will also miss spending time with you all at choir. Do drop by to see us when you are free ok?

Choir Camp (June 2010)

Thank you to those who joined us at choir camp. I hope that everyone had a great time and got to know one another better. Through this camp, I also got to know you and your leaders a lot better. I also hope that you got to see the less serious side of me... (especially when I demonstrated the catwalk LOL!!! But I still seriously think that I did the catwalk better than your Seniors, HAHA!!!)

Your camp leaders and I will give you a post camp review probably by next week. We will also be seeking your opinion on what you would like to have for the next camp (likely to be in Dec this year). Like I mentioned, this camp should be a training camp and thus will not have so many team building activities.

Good Comments Received for Speech Day Rehearsal

Dear Choir Members,

I'd like to tell you all the good comments heard from teachers on your singing yesterday. Some teachers heard you from the staff room and came out to take a look. Mr Chia is also very impressed with the singing. (We have come a long way... for those who knows what I'm talking about)

Singing wise, we are improving... we now have to work on our professionalism when it comes to singing... every practice, and rehearsal must be treated like the actual performance. Remember, we are not judged on our singing alone... the visual and emotional engagement is also very important. If we work on that... we are on our way towards providing an audio and visual treat to who ever is listening to us. I long for the day when people will stop to listen to us, whether we are practicing in the needlework room, at the foyer or in the canteen.

I'd also like to commend Yvonne too for taking the courage to lead the choir in the singing in spite of the fact that she has not received any formal music training.

Keep it up choir... We sing as one.

Absence from CCA

I have also noticed lately that there are some members who are in school in the morning, but do not turn up for choir training in afternoon because you claim to be unwell. I understand that the weather has been rather bad lately and many people are falling sick. However, if you are well enough to be in school in the morning, I don't see why you cannot turn up for choir practices. Furthermore, these members turn up for school the following morning.

I would appreciate it if you contact me before choir practice if you are not able to turn up. You all have my mobile number, there is no reason why I'm not informed. I would require an MC for your absence from CCA. Parent's letter will only be accepted on a case by case basis. I have no wish to hold members back for detention. This is not constructive for relationship building.

Hope that the sec twos and sec threes have a fruitful camp and come back to school a more resilient individual. Have a great holiday ahead.

Great Job for CNY Performance

Dear Choir...

I'm so proud of you all for putting up such a wonderful performance today. Not only did you sing well, you also looked really good. I think Mr Lim deserves a lot of credit. Three Cheers for Mr Lim!!! Mr Lim had to leave quickly after the performance as he has another school to go to. However, his message to me is that you all sang really well. During my casual conversation with him, he also commended all of you for being very dedicated and hard working. Keep it up!!!

I'd also like to thank the senior for coming back to listen you the choir. I really hope to see you all more often. I'm working out something with the current exco to form a Choir Alumni. Hope that you'll give us your support.

Hope that all of you liked the little new year (or Valentine's Day) gift I prepared for you. I know I hope that all of you will keep up the energy in-spite of the mounting pressure from school work. Dear Choir,

Thank you for your enthusiasm today. I know that everyone is feeling the pressure from school work, thanks for giving your 100%. I think that you all did well today, so proud of you all. This is a good start to the year.

Please do take note of the following points from today's rehearsal;

Some of you still look a bit tense. I know it feel strange... but just imaging that Mr Lim is standing there conducting you. Imagine what he'll look like when you do smile.
The order of the songs are as follow; Peng You, He Xin Nian. After this, we'll exit and let band play the theme song from Ponyo. Immediately after that song, you will enter again and sing Da di huei chun together with band.
Remember to look confident.

Was it all about punishment???

Dear Members,

I thought that I have to reiterate once more the rationale for the punishments during the camp. I read and heard some feedback from your Group ICs regarding the punishments and I feel that it is extremely important that everyone understands the rationale or else, all efforts which your choir leaders and I have put in to organise this camp would be in vain.

Our demands in terms of Punctuality, Responsibility and Resilience

We do not give timing which ourselves cannot meet. Throughout the camp, I have demanded that your Camp Leaders must be at the location waiting for you and that they cannot be late. Otherwise, they would also be punished. Please take note that the leaders were able to meet my demands on punctuality in spite of the fact that we had lesser time to eat and sleep.

In terms of responsibility, we only asked for a few simple things;

Personal responsibility: Water Bottles (at least half filled), booklets and writing materials, flag and meeting the timing.

Group responsibility: That all items are placed in the proper way and that the group should bring the items with them wherever they go.

Group IC responsibility: To ensure that all of the above are met. (Once again, as a leader, you do not just ensure that you can do something well. You need to ensure that others can do it as well, if not better)

We gave difficult tasks, but not impossible ones. This is to help you build resilience as there will be times that you will not able to meet our demands. When this happens, you need to reflect on why this is the case and device a personal and group strategy on how to do it better the next time.

Punishment Guidelines

Before the camp, your choir leaders and I had a pretty long discussion on the kind of tone we would like to set for the camp. We had the following options;

Fun, Casual, Relaxed
Fun, Firm and Serious, Disciplined
Fun, Firm and Serious, Whack until you all die
Fun, Firm and Serious, Disciplined, Push everyone to your mental limits

We decided on the last one. We feel that other than fun, the tone has to be a firm and serious one with good discipline in order for Choir as a whole to move forward quickly and efficiently. (a gentle reminder that we have quite a bit of catching up to do if we are to reach our SYF 2011 goals.

I also thought, with the eventual support of your leaders that the camp should also push you to your mental limits (especially if you the Group IC). For the details, I've already explained in the earlier posting.

Therefore, as a guideline, I told the Camp Leaders that they would decide on the punishments and I would moderate (as I do not know what your physical and mental limits are). However, I have one general and important guideline for the Camp Leaders, that what ever they request from you they must also be able to do. We worked on this principal throughout the whole camp. Of course, whatever I asked from you, I will also be able to do. Although I'm 20kg heavier than I used to be. (HaAA...) We also standardised the punishment which we will give to ensure that you are not physically punished at one location of your body only.

So I hope that all understand the general guidelines we adopt for carrying out punishments.

Why physical punishments? Is there no other way?

Of course, you all may wonder why we have decided to give physical punishments instead of other forms of punishments such as cutting your shower time or lunch time etc.

Physical punishments helps to build mental strength. Far too often, we allow our body to control our minds. For example, you didn't have enough sleep the night before and your body tells you the following morning that you are extremely tired. When you are in the class, your body tells your mind to shut down (excuses) and therefore, you go into sleep mode. The body has taken over the mind. However, your mind is stronger than you think it is... if suddenly, your favourite movie is shown, you will immediately wake up. In this case your mind has taken over control again.

There are many things in life that are good for us, but the journey towards obtaining it is a painful one. For any sportsman to do extremely well, they go through boring and sometimes painful routines. And once they become good at it, they start to enjoy the game. Those who could not endure eventually give up on the sport. This applies for music as well, for those who plays the piano or for that matter, any other musical instruments, you have to go through very strict and frequent practices on your scales before you are able to play a beautiful piece of music.

The effect of physical punishments would last a few days. (I'm sure that some of you had sore muscles a few days after the camp) This is a gentle reminder that there are consequences for every action (or inaction). A lot of time the consequences do have lingering effects. Sometimes, the consequences make it progressively more difficult for you to achieve your goals.

For example, you could have gone up to your dorms to get your stuff and assembled in 7 mins. However, you were not able to do so due to various reasons (or excuses) you had to endure physical punishments which further tire your body. It would have made it more difficult for you to meet the subsequent time given.

In life, you could have done extremely well in your studies if you listened attentively in class, did your assignments and read ahead so that you are prepared for the next lesson. (Ideal... but how many of us actually do that?) The consequence of not doing any of the above would be to fall behind in terms of understanding of the topic. However, the next topic or chapter requires foundational knowledge of the topic which you did not have a full understanding of. As such, even if you decide later to do all of the above, you would find it more difficult. Can you think of other instances where this is true?

Were my expectations too high? Were the punishments pegged at the level for boys?

As I've mentioned over and over again, it is all about the mental strength, not physical strength. Are girls really physically and mentally weaker than boys? Do you really believe this? If you do, then there is no point reading any further.

Otherwise, I can tell you that this is absolutely not true. In terms of absolute physical strength, a male (physically larger than a female) would have greater physical strength), but in terms of relative strength, it is still largely debatable. Even in sports, you find male and females competing in same events although in different categories and with different timing. (due to difference in absolute strength)

Mentally, it is undeniable that the female has greater mental strength than a male. Otherwise, I can't imaging how a woman can subject herself to 9 months of changes and 5 to 10 hour of indescribable labour pain to bear a child.

Do you know how a man can control an elephant (many times his weight and size)? Can he weaken the elephant physically? The answer is obviously no. So he cleverly weakens the elephant's mind. A baby elephant is tied at its leg to a very strong pole. Of course, at this age, the baby elephant doesn't have enough physical strength to pull itself loose, no matter how hard it tries. Over time, the elephants mind (will power) weakened and it resigns to fate that it will never pull itself loose. At this time, the elephant give up altogether. Every time a rope is tied to the elephant's leg and looped around a pole which is not strong enough to hold it in place, its mind says that its stuck although it is physically well able to pull itself loose.

Notice that I did not pick on how well you executed the physical punishment. I was contented to see you try. All I wanted was for you to overcome your mental barrier and continue to try. As I always tell Gerald, "Daddy is proud of you as long as you have tried your best".

What does it mean to you?

At the end of all this... I would like everyone of us. (including the choir leaders, seniors and myself) to ask ourselves that all this mean to us. This is where the learning takes place. This is the reason why CCAs, camps and all are always the best way to build a person's character.

What does it mean to choir?

Of course, this is choir camp. Therefore, all that we are doing must somehow benefit choir as a whole. I'd everyone to spend some time answer this question as well.

Thank you for a great job by your Camp Leaders

Dear Members,

We need to all say a big thank you to Teresa, Grace and Poh Im.

Teresa, Grace and Poh Im,

A very big thank you for all the hard work which you all have put in for the camp. Although I mentioned to the members before we broke camp, I'll still want to put this down on record.

We started planning for this camp as early as August 2009. And yes... cruel Mr Chong (thats me) told you all to give me a proposal without giving too much guidance. The three of you came up with Version A and probably to Version Z from August to October. Finally, a 16 page proposal containing details for programme for all three days with details on each activity surfaced in Novemeber. Only then did Mr Chong come into the picture to say, "I want this, you need to change that, etc" Being very positive and receptive, necessary changes and modifications were made to the document. A camp booklet was also designed along the way. We worked tirelessly one week before the actual camp to prepare for all logistics and to finalise the programmes. Honestly, this is a very well conceptualised camp considering that non of you had experience in doing this.

During the Camp, all three of you kept your cool in spite of the many changes to the programme. You have shown me how adaptable you all were. I'm proud of all of you. Although tiring, it is one of the most stress free camp which I have been a teacher in charged of. Thanks for shouldering the stress on my behalf. I also hope that you have learnt a great deal about leadership and camp organisation and running. You have demonstrated all our PRIDE values through this camp.

I'm sure that all members got to know each of you better, just as I have. And I'm sure that all members appreciate your hard work.

Inaugural Choir EOY Camp 2009

Dear Members,

A big thank you to all who has attended the camp and roughed it out together. The objectives of this camp are to;

Bond the members together (foster greater understanding between members)
Instill resilience in members (we need a lot of it to reach our SYF goals)
Discover and develop leaders in choir (at every level, from Choir leaders/senior, Group ICs to Campers)

I think that we have managed to achieve all these.

Everyone of you who participated in the camp impressed me with your mental strength and endurance. It is alright to shed tears for it is a normal reaction to the physical and mental pain that the camp leaders and I put you through. However, no one gave up altogether.

At times, one or two of you gave up because you body told you that you cannot carry on. However, I could see that your mind was constantly trying to take over the situation and you eventually managed to carry on. I just want you to realise that you are a lot stronger than you think you are if you are able to train your mind to be strong. How many times have we tell ourselves that we cannot do it, even before we try. How many times have we told ourselves to give up because of one set back while trying something new. I hope that the mental strength which have acquired during this camp can be put to good use in improving all aspects of your life, from your studies, to Choir, and to your own personal life.

As for the Group ICs, I would like to congratulate you on surviving the leadership training (Part 1 of infinity). I hope that I was able to help you understand the essence of leadership during this camp. A strong organisation needs strong leaders at all levels. In Choir context, we need a forward looking Principal and CCA HoD to support our cause, strong and resourceful teachers in charge to craft the direction of choir and to bring out the best in everyone of our members, a good instructor to bring out your fullest potential in singing, good President and Executive Committee to motivate and lead the members towards achieving our goals, motivated choir members who believe in the vision and goals of the choir.

It is not so much the physical fitness which I am concerned about during your training. What the physical training really brings out are;

Mental Strength and Resilience (this has been quite well explained earlier, but a leader has to have a lot more of this than the ones that you are leading)
Responsibility (the physical punishment is for you to experience the consequence of responsibility that come with your appointment)
Excellence for self and others (no point if only you are on time and that you can do something well, you have to be able to move others to achieve your standards as well)

I hope that the members were able to see all these displayed by you during the camp, not only when you were punished for failure to ensure that the campers meet our demands, but also during the normal activities when the camp leaders/seniors and I were not watching (this is the time when your members judge you the most because your actions come from you hearts and not because someone is watching you). Anyway, this is just the beginning of your leadership training with me. I will get more demanding along the way.

As for the Seniors, the Camp Leaders and I are extremely grateful for your presence and support.

Jane, thank you for being the live wire of the choir during the first day. Your enthusiasm has widespread influence on our members. Thank you for staying with us till late on Monday night although you have lessons on the following morning.

Wendy, thank you for helping out on Monday night immediately after your classes. Its a pity that you didn't have time to interact very much with your juniors. I believe that the juniors would gain a lot through interacting with you.

Jiaying, I hope that I was able to convince you that my methods are essential in bringing out the best in everyone of our members. I also thank you for the love and concern you have for everyone of our choir members and for your constant reminder to me to display a more humane side of me. Your comments set me thinking a number of times, that's why we decided to give the campers more rest time after the water games, a chance to make up for their mistake during dinner time (which the campers were not able to) as well as to delay the waking up time on both days and of course... the FIRE DRILL which was planned for 3.15am on Wednesday morning. EVERYONE... SAY A BIG THANK YOU TO JIAYING!!!

Lim Min, ha ha... you impress me with your ability to pretend that you are sleeping... (oh, just in case the other members didn't know... she is fully awake even with her eyes closed). Your assistance in taking care of the logistics enabled us to fully concentrate on running the camp. But you are most remembered for your "crying" during the treasure haunt. Wah... scared Caroline, Shupin and Edwina big time.

Joy, your help in the logistics also enabled us to concentrate on running the camp. Your quiet support has not gone unnoticed. Oh yes... must say a very big thank you to you and Jiaying for taking such good care of Mdm Rositah.

To all seniors, we look forward to your continued support for next year's camp.

The AHS Choir in the last few years has witnessed unprecedented growth and accomplishment under the inspired baton of our resident conductor, Terrence Toh. A few of these achievements include the coveted Gold with Honours at the 2007 and 2009 SYF Central Judging for Choir and a Gold at the International Festival of Songs in Olomouc, Czech Republic in 2008. However, these accolades are not the choir’s only source of pride and joy, but rather the instilling of a passion for the choral art form and a deep desire to bring music to our community. With this focus in mind, the choir has sung in a host of community based performances, including our annual concerts and as invited guests at various ceremonies held by government and community organizations. Results SYF 2009

Dear Members,

We obtained a Certificate of Participation. We have tried our best for this SYF. I would like to reiterate again that I'm proud of all of you if you have tried your best. There may be unpleasant comments which may come your way. We can't stop that, but we can manage the way we hear these comments.

Hold your heads up high because you had the determination and courage to try all the way although the odds are against you. Lets not be shallow and wish only to be part of organisations and groups that succeed. Let us be the ones who bring success to the organisation. We are the PHSSChoir. (COP or not)

About 2/3 of the participants were from the lower secondary. Please to take this SYF as a very good exposure so that you will bring glory to us and do us proud in 2011. I thank the Secondary Ones for their commitment over the last three months. As for the Secondary Twos, I see and appreciate your effort.

To the Upper Secondary members, thank you for your selflessness. Be proud of yourself that your participation gave a chance to the lower secondary students to be exposed to this central judging. Should they achieve a good medal in 2011, you will also share in the glory. Please continue to support the lower secondary and lead them by example.

I also thank Mr Hu for his guidance in spite of the many challenges we faced over the last 2 years.

I would also like to acknowledge my Choir Presidents for leading our choir. Thank you for being my emotional pillar of support so very often when the going gets tough. Let move on from here and continue to improve the choir.

Mdm Ho deserves special mention too as she has put in many extra hours for us.

Having said this, we should not indulge in self consolation and deceive ourselves. We need to reflect upon what was done right and what we could have done better. Only then, would we be able to improve. Please do consider this before we resume practices on 19th May 2009 (Tue). We will spend some time doing reflections.

Meanwhile, do your best for your studies. Work hard for your exams. Your leaders and I will be planning a (long overdue) BBQ for you after the exams.

Once again, I'm proud of you.

Thank you for your active participation today, including Mdm Rositah. All of you gave your best shot. You overcame your fear of holding a microphone, singing in front of an audience. I think that over the last three days, you all have become more confident singers. Please keep it up.

Learning from Band

I showed you all the video I took during band practice yesterday. I could see your effort in maintaining the discipline before the break, but things sort of returned to normal after the break.

I'm writing this with a heavy heart because I had to do something very unpleasant today. I don't enjoy it. On my way home, I kept asking if I've done the correct thing. Sigh!..... I hope not to have to do any more of this.

Team Bonding

I hope that everyone enjoyed the game "Animal Farm". Other than enjoying the game, there are many lessons that can be learnt from this game.

Learning from other's mistakes and success - As you watch other groups play, you would have started designing your own strategies.
Unity is strength - once you have found your own kind (animal), you start to make louder noise to attract more of your own kind. Please do take note that this can either be positive or negative. On a positive note, if you are in the company of others who are good... you are likely to attract more good people to you. The reverse can also be true. Where choir is concerned. If the section sings as one voice, those who are not so sure will find it easier to follow.
Stop and take stock every now and then - remember the group that "blindly" (literally) went around with all their members formed up looking for more members simply because they did not stop to count the number of members they already have. And when they eventually stopped to count, there were more than one person counting and they counted one short and continued to walk around. It is necessary to stop and reflect on what has been done and consider how the situation one can get out of a bad situation or make a good situation better. Every choir member needs to stop and reflect every now and then on the practice sessions.
Last but not least... what this whole game is all about... LISTENING. During the game, everyone is trying to be heard... hoping that one of their kind will find them. At the same time, everyone was also trying hard to listen hard to find one of their own kind. To one animal... the sound that all other animals were making is absolute noise. Isn't it amazing how you could filter all the noise and listen only to the sound which you want to hear? When you sing as a combined choir.... you are singing and at the same time, listening to your other section members. You would also need to filter out all other sounds by the other sections so that you would not be lost. On another note, during the practice session... it is important that you listen to the conductor.

Anyway... thanks to Adeline and her team of Lunch personnel.... for making the drinks and clearing up after lunch today.

Combined Practice

The discipline today has improved. But A1 still has a pitching problem. I hope that all section leaders paid attention to the areas where you section tends to make mistakes and work on it tomorrow during sectional.

Reflections... Choir Day Camp 18th Mar 2009

Some members were still late... but I'm pleased that the latest members arrived at about 9.04am. Keep the the improvement. We want to start activities at the time stated.

Getting to Know You...

I'm glad that all of you enjoyed the Blanket Game. Hope that you now know one another better. In life, we don't always live for ourselves. In fact, without the ones we love and others who are important to us, we lose our directions. When you know the people in your group and that your actions will have an impact on him/her, you would strive to make a positive impact and avoid negative impact.

Lunch

Mdm Rositah and I apologise for letting you all go hungry for 1 hr. We will do better at this area. We will make sure that lunch will commence at 12noon on 19th Mar 2009. Hope that all of you enjoyed the lunch provided. Drink are complimentary... yes... once again sponsored by Mdm Rositah and myself.

Combined Practice

I'm encouraged to see that you all are trying hard to remember Mr Chong's lesson in life.... LISTEN. I can see that you are paying more attention now. However, there are still some of you, in your nature, chatting away at any opportunity... Especially.... A***S.

Most of you looked sleepy and tired, but you did your best to keep awake. Blame it on lunch...

You are sounding much better. Much closer to performance standards... Please keep up the good work.

A1/Mezzo Sop.... you have to work harder on the roundness of your voice. You have overcomed the pitching problem, now its time to sound like choral singers... not karaoke singers ok?

S1 is sounding good. Remember the lesson on using the support of your diaphram, especially when you sing the higher notes... otherwise, your notes will tend to drift.

S2 sounds great!

A2 sounds great too.... but chatty and some sleepy.

Lets have a great practice sessions today.

I know that some of us are Shy.
I know that some of us have Stage Fright.
I know that it is not easy to Sing High Notes.
But I know, We can give our best in every performance on stage.

If some people say that you can't sing,
don't listen to them!

Don't take all the choir practises as play time,
take it as a time where you can show your passion

Choir Practice on 10th Feb 2009

Dear Choir Members,

Thank you for coming for the Sectional Training on 6th Feb 2009. Feedback on the progress is positive. I hope to see the effect tomorrow during your formal combined practices. Your choir leaders and I have reviewed that day's progress and we will be updating you on how the sectional will be conducted during subsequent Friday Sessions in order to make it more effective and efficient. If you have any suggestions on how to make sectionals more efficient (and FUN) please do feedback to any of your Choir Leaders.

Tomorrow's practice will continue as normal. I have noticed that the lower secondary are coming in only at 3pm. As a result, warm ups starts only at about 3.10pm. Do remember what I told you all about being punctual. Training should start at 3pm sharp. That means that all lower secondary member and upper secondary member who do not have to go for ACE will report to the History Room before 3pm. I have lessons till 2.30pm and I make it a point to open the doors for you no later than 2.40pm. I would definitely appreciate it if you can reciprocate the effort.

Reflection on Training Today

Dear Choir Members,

Please take note of the following;

Discipline

There's still a lot of room for improvement where discipline is concerned. Section Leaders and Presidents, please look into this. I would like to see the choir being more attentive during training. Section Leaders who find that your section has been left along for too long, please ask Mr Hu if you can go for sectional training and ask for a time to return.

Singing Assessment

Mr Hu and I will be testing your singing on Thursday. Every member will be tested on your ability to your parts. Please learn your part well. We will be focusing on Pitch (accuracy) and Timing. We will be testing individual members ability to sing with other parts. Please make an effort to learn your parts. Section Leaders, please ensure that all your new secondary one section members have the mp3 by Thursday.

Practice on Thursday

All upper secondary members (including the presidents) will report at 4pm this Thursday. Please make use of this extra hour to study for the common test or catch up with work.

Farewell to Tina

I apologise for not announcing this at the end of yesterday's practice. The email I received on this new states that her last day is 30/2. Upon a second look at the email today, I occured to me that there is a typo error in the message and that it should be 30/1. (Feb doesn't have 30 days). I intended to make the announcement only at a later date.

The choir and I wish Tina all the best upon her return to Korea. I am sad to loose a good singer while many of you would be sad to loose a good friend.

At this point in time, I that all of us can learn from the positive attitude displayed by Tina. Her last day in school is today and she still faithfully came for choir training yesterday. I am sincerely touched by your commitment and I hope that the rest can learn from this.

Finally, Choir would like to say farewell. We can keep in touch through this blog. Hope that you will continue singing back in Korea. Do let us know ok?

Reflection of training on 29th Jan 2009

Dear Choir Members,

I'm penning down the reflections which I shared with you yesterday evening.

Individual Singers have to do your part

I hope that everyone remembers this. Individually, as a singer, you need to get your pitch right. You have to constantly reflect upon where you normally go wrong and tackle the problem. If you are unable to, please do approach Mr Hu for help. However, there is no substitute for hard work. You need to know your part so well you can sing it while sleeping.

Overall Discipline of Members

Some of you here are still not paying attention during practices. Section Leaders and Presidents have to be on the look out for this. Section leaders should be the first to remind fellow section members to pay attention. Let the choir presidents handle uncooperative members.

I will be requesting Mr Hu to test your singing by having one member per section to sing. Get ready for that. Remember that individually, you need to know and hold your notes.

Start of Friday Practices

Please note that we will start Friday practices from next week onwards from 1.15pm to 4.15pm. I understand that some of you have concern about the amount of time spend for choir practices. You will then have to consider how you can make each and every training session and effective one. Everyone of you can start by doing your homework, learn and sing your part as well as remember the points which Mr Hu has given. (your diction, dynamics, breathing etc) If you are able to do that, you'll hear an improvement for every training session. If that's the case, we will not require extra sessions.

I have made a promise that I'll stop Friday Sessions if I'm satisfied with your performance during Tuesday and Thursday training session. As such, each and everyone of you needs to have moral courage to advice uncooperative members to be more cooperative as their actions results in undesirable consequences for you.

No Practice on Thursday 22 Jan 2009

Please note that there there will not be any training on the date stated. This is in view of the extra training hours which you all have put in for the CCA Fiesta and the Two Assembly.

A good performance today

Dear Choir Members,

You sang well today. I think that our singing at the grass patch yesterday did some good. I think we should sing outdoor more often. Pretty inspirational isn't it? Singing without the microphone also helped somewhat in my opinion.

I have a few pointers which may be useful to all of you.

Some of you are still not extremely accurate in your pitching. You need to work on that.
Some are still not paying attention to the conductor and thus, not keeping in time.
I think we'll need to do some laughing excercise. The lifting of the cheekbone is still not seen.
Do read the lyrics and understand it. You need to immerse yourself into the song in order to bring out its flavour.
Sop 1 needs to pay attention to the parts of the song where your pitching normally goes out.

But on the whole, I'm very happy with the performance today. Thank you for the hard work. Do rest well during the CNY period and be prepared to put in a lot more hard work for the SYF.

A gentle reminder that we'll be getting you to sing in small groups to access if you know your parts on Thursday 29th Jan 2009.
